Prasanna, a 23-year-old young man with a disability, was born in a rural village near Lingasugur Taluk in Raichur District, Karnataka. His parents, daily wage agricultural laborers, struggled to provide for the family. Prasanna’s life took a challenging turn at the age of four when he was affected by the polio virus, leaving one leg disabled.

Despite their limited resources, his family sought treatment in various cities, but nothing could reverse the effects of the disability. This left Prasanna and his family emotionally drained, facing societal stigma and discrimination. Undeterred, Prasanna managed to complete his graduation, but his quest for employment was met with repeated rejections due to his disability.

A Turning Point

Prasanna’s life changed when a friend introduced him to the Voice of Needy Foundation’s Residential Skill Development and Employment Program. Motivated by the opportunity, he contacted VNF and enrolled in the 45-day training program.

Basavaraju’s journey from a struggling individual to a successful entrepreneur and community leader highlights the transformative impact of the Voice of Needy Foundation’s Self-Employment and Social Entitlement Programs. His story underscores the potential for individuals with disabilities to achieve self-reliance and inspire others when provided with the right tools and support.

Basavaraju, a 42-year-old man with a physical impairment, lives in Mathalli village on the outskirts of Bangalore. His family comprises six members—his parents, wife, two daughters, and himself. Despite financial and physical challenges, Basavaraju managed to complete his education up to 2nd PU (Pre-University).

The COVID-19 pandemic brought additional struggles for Basavaraju and his family. During this time, he was identified by the Voice of Needy Foundation (VNF) team for a vaccination drive, marking the beginning of a transformative journey with VNF.

A Turning Point

Hemadri – A Journey from Bedridden to School Active

Hemadri, an 8-year-old boy from Aluru village, was born healthy. However, at just four months old, his parents noticed delays in his developmental milestones. They sought help from various hospitals, and after multiple visits, Hemadri was diagnosed with Muscular Dystrophy—a genetic condition causing progressive muscle weakness and degeneration.

When the Voice of Needy Foundation (VNF) first met Hemadri in 2023, he was bedridden, with limited mobility and no access to support services. Our community worker quickly stepped in to provide much-needed assistance:

  1. Facilitated Key Entitlements:
    • Secured his Unique Disability ID (UDID) card.
    • Arranged a government monthly allowance to support his needs.
    • Procured a wheelchair to improve his mobility.
  2. Connected to Local Resources:
Collaborated with the local Gram Panchayat to secure financial assistance for his medical expenses.
  3. Comprehensive Rehabilitation Plan:
    • Conducted a detailed screening with therapists and doctors at our Outreach Early Intervention Center in partnership with Thamahar Trust, Madanayakanahalli.
    • Designed a customized rehabilitation plan focusing on improving Hemadri’s physical abilities.

Impact of Rehabilitation Services

Through regular sessions, Hemadri’s condition has significantly improved.

  • He has gained neck control and begun using his hands for simple tasks.
  • Encouraged by his progress, we facilitated his admission to a government school, where he is now studying in 1st grade.

In school, Hemadri is a shining star:

  • He actively participates in class activities.
  • He greets teachers and peers with a bright smile, spreading joy wherever he goes.

Additional Family Support

To ensure a sustainable livelihood, VNF supported Hemadri’s mother with a tailoring machine in 2024. We also assisted the family in applying for a carer’s allowance from the Government of Karnataka to help with his ongoing care.

Hemadri’s parents express heartfelt gratitude to Mrs. Danamma and the entire VNF team for their unwavering support and for bringing hope and happiness to their child’s life.

Hemadri’s story is a testament to the power of early intervention, community collaboration, and compassionate care, creating lasting impact for children with disabilities.
